Press Release

Manly Council's General Manager, Henry Wong, has announced that a Climate Change Forum will be held on Sunday 29th October, focusing on the effects of climate change in the Manly area.

Author and science commentator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will facilitate the event which will be free and open to the public. The event provides a unique opportunity for a panel of experts to discuss the topic of climate change as it relates to the Manly area. A lively and entertaining discussion will be facilitated by Dr Karl, who is renowned for turning complex science into practical and relevant information. "Here’s your chance to think locally" says Dr Karl, "because you can actually get a chance to make changes in your local area.”

Open to the public, the free forum will be of interest to residents, property owners, businesses and community organisations.

This is a follow up event to the Future's Forum, which was held in 2005, where Tim Flannery and Elizabeth Farrelly raised awareness on issues such as sea level rise. Following the Future's Forum the Mayor of Manly, Dr Peter Macdonald released the strategy document "Surfing the Future" which includes consideration for the issue of climate change. These activities highlight Manly Council's strong commitment to planning effectively for the risks associated with climate change.

At the Climate Change Forum there will be information stands providing practical information on the various activities already underway in Manly. There will also be a photo and film competition leading up to the event. Any images of severe storms in Manly whether recent or historic can be entered, with a $200 voucher being awarded to the winner.

Bookings for the two-hour forum can be made by calling the Manly Environment Centre on 9976 2842.
