22.10.2010: Humpbacks in Sydney

Yesterday’s whale watching cruise left Sydney Harbour at 9 am and was to experience an amazing encounter with migrating Humpback whales. A pot of five whales played around in the ocean for two hours and offered a stunning show, while three to four other whales were seen in a distance. On a return trip in the afternoon two further whales were sighted.

The Humpback whales are right now passing Sydney on their way to their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean. The whales have spent the winter in the warmer waters of Harvey Bay to calve and are now returning to Antarctic waters.
