21.02.2012: Coal Seam Gas Opposition Grows

Opposition to coal seam gas extraction is rising in the industry's heartland.

The latest Newspoll shows the majority of Queenslanders are either opposed to or undecided about CSG extraction.

Forty per cent of voters said they were not in favour of the industry, while 27 per cent remained uncommitted to the issue, according to the the poll published in yesterday's The Australian newspaper.

Queensland and NSW are the centre of Australia's rapidly-expanding coal seam gas industry.

While CSG miners say the gas provides a much greener energy choice, environmentalists and scientists have questioned those claims.  Farmers fear losing control of their land, and many people feel the coal seam gas rush is threatening our environment, our health and our water.
