Disposable cups are mugging our ecosystem – try reusable cups instead

The Manly Environment Centre is hosting an information display (including a ‘visual installation’) at Manly Wharf to encourage us all to break the environmentally damaging ‘disposable cup habit’ as part of fortieth ‘Earth Day Celebrations’ on Thursday, 22 April 2010.

Australians use approximately 500 million disposable cups a year (that’s 951 per minute).

Most of these cups cannot be recycled (due to the plastic lining and lids) and take over 50 years to bio-degrade.

Using reusable cups, however, helps save trees, lowers CO2 emissions, reduces landfill, and saves energy.

In Manly alone, it is estimated that more than 750,000 disposable cups per year are used.

According to the US-based coffee giant, Starbucks:

“If only 50 customers a day in every store were to use reusable mugs, Starbucks would save 150,000 disposable paper cups daily. This equals 1.7 million pounds of paper, 3.7 million pounds of solid waste, and 150,000 trees a year.”

Partnering the Manly Environment Centre Earth Day event are the International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) Green Team and staff, KeepCup, and Sydney Ferries.

In addition, local cafes including Barefoot Coffee Traders, Bean Rush, Brookvale TAFE, Fusion Point, ICMS Courtyard Café, Red Earth Coffee are participating by offering a variety of discounts to patrons who bring their own reusable cup on Earth Day.

‘A Day at the Bay’ - Earth Day Celebrations focus on Manly’s Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve

Name of the event: 'A Day at the Bay'
When: Saturday 24th April
Times: 10am – 4pm
Where: Cabbage Tree Bay, Shelly Beach, Manly

An informative and entertaining ‘Earth Day Celebration’ will be hosted by the Manly Environment Centre at Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve (Manly Beach headland to Shelly Beach) from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 24 April 2010.

The Manly Environment Centre is celebrating the 40th annual Earth Day with ‘A Day at the Bay’ - the main activities located on Shelly Beach with a small number of marine-focused stalls, a giant art banner kids’ activity (a work in progress throughout the day), guided snorkel tours, rock platform walks and marine talks.

Local artists and photographers are invited to set up for the day around Cabbage Tree Bay, providing an opportunity to capture the beauty of the area and its rich biodiversity.

The event will also provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water’s (DECCW) ‘Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve: Draft Fisheries Management (Aquatic Reserve) Regulation 2009 and Implementation Strategy’

Members of the public and community interest groups are being invited by the DECCW to comment in writing on the draft management plan regulation and draft implementation strategy, submissions being considered before the regulation and implementation strategy are finalised in mid-2010.
